The Spetsnaz have created a fierce reputation as one of the world's best special forces due to the very harsh standards of their training. Less than 2 in 10 candidates pass the course, which lasts for several months and includes training in hand-to-hand combat, weapons, intelligence gathering, hostage negotiation and rescue, riot control, field medicine and a large emphasis on physical fitness.
6. French Naval Commandos

The Naval Commandos are nicknamed 'bérets verts' (Green Berets) and their qualification training is very tough. Lasting 20 weeks, it includes one week of commando testing, 6 weeks of preparatory training, 4 weeks of evaluation, commando training for 7 weeks, and 2 weeks of paratrooper training. During this period, any mistake can instantly disqualify the candidate. The instructors are usually former commando operatives who monitor and punish any misconduct with extra-hard physical activity. Sleep is scarce, just two hours a day, with the sound of grenades waking students each night.
5. MARSOC (United States)

The US Marine Corps Forces Special Operations Command, or MARSOC, was created in 2007 and is a unit of elite soldiers used in direct conflict and reconnaissance missions.
The training consists of four phases. The first part is training SERE (Survival, Evasion, Resistance, Escape) in which the soldiers learn to survive in the wilderness and are trained in various martial arts.
In phase 2 and 3, their marksmanship, explosives and reconnaissance skills are put to the test. The heaviest aptitude test follows in phase 4, when the acquired knowledge is tested in various martial exercises.
4. US Army Rangers

Although the modern US Rangers were born in 1942, the first US Rangers came into existence in 1676 and fought in the American Revolution, the War of 1812 and the American Civil War. The 75th Ranger Regiment is now a special operations combat formation within the U.S. Army Special Operation Command (USASOC). They operate in small units that can be deployed quickly and flexibly. The light infantry force specializes im para-and airborne attacks. Each Ranger battalion can be deployed anywhere in the world within 18 hours.

Shayetet 13 is the elite naval commando unit of the Israeli Navy. The unit is considered one of the primary Special Forces units of the Israel Defense Forces (along with Sayeret Matkal and Shaldag Unit). S'13 specializes in sea-to-land incursions, counter-terrorism, sabotage, maritime intelligence gathering, maritime hostage rescue, and boarding.
The training for Shayetet 13 has a success rate of only 5 percent. Not surprising when you consider that the recruits have to endure such severe trials that an army doctor must be present at all times.
S'13 took part in Operation Spring of Youth of 1973, in which Israeli special forces raided Beirut and killed several members of Black September, the group which had carried out the Munich Massacre of Israeli athletes in the Munich 1972 Summer Olympics.
2, US Navy SEALs

SEAL stands for Sea, Air, Land. The elite corps of 2000 men go through a year-long period of training before joining the squad. The third week of basic training is the worst. The so-called 'Hell Week' challenges the recruits both physically and mentally, putting them repeatedly through ordeals such as swimming miles in the sea and running through loose sand.
Although many of the missions remain secret, SEALs are known to have been deployed during the Gulf War and the Iraq War.

According to the experts, the British Special Air Service is the 'best of the best'. The unit's intensive training is the global model for almost all command programs.
The training is similar to that of the US Navy SEALs, with the added advantage that the British commandos are also trained by intelligence services MI5 and MI6. Therefore members of the SAS are part soldier and part secret agent.
Of course, even the 'best of the best' make the occasional blunder. In March 2011 two MI6 officers and six SAS soldiers were captured in Libya, causing major embarassment to the British government.
